and Treatment with Physical Therapy Expertise – Repeated, jerky movement of the arm overburdens the tendons in the elbow. The prolonged overburdening of these tendons can cause tennis elbow. A single forceful jerk or trauma to the elbow can also cause this condition. Note that tennis elbow is not limited to tennis players. Using tools for plumbing, gardening, or sawing may damage the tendons as well. The senior population faces an even higher risk of developing this condition.

What is a “True” Tennis Elbow?

Tennis elbow is a handy term for people to refer to pain in the elbow area. But its implication is specific.

      Tennis elbow

is a condition caused by the overloading of the common extensor tendon. Medical professionals have categorized it into two types; true tennis elbow and “pseudo,” or false, tennis elbow.

False tennis elbow covers every painful condition unrelated to the common extensor tendon. Elbow pain can heal in a few hours or days. True tennis elbow, on the other hand, can cause discomfort for weeks and months.

  Tennis Elbow Prevention

The first step is to identify the activities that put you at the risk of injuring your elbow. Here are some preventative measures to take while playing sports or working:

Use techniques that distribute weight in the forearms and biceps while performing tasks. Improve your mechanics of using sports equipment and work tools. Otherwise, incorrect habits will get ingrained in your muscle memory.

One option is to work with a physical therapy expert. They will monitor your movements and suggest exercises and corrective postures.

  Arm Exercises

Develop forearm and biceps muscles to enable them to better bear the brunt. The muscle group in those areas absorbs shock while swinging and hitting. Strong muscles mean a lesser burden on the elbow.

  Use Better Equipment

Ergonomically designed equipment is easier to grip and use. Sports players can use lighter racquets with cushioned and wider grips to ease tension on the tendons. The same applies to tools.

  Use Elbow Bands

Athletes and professionals such as carpenters, plumbers, roofers, and mechanics can consider wearing elbow braces. Keep workplace safety in your mind and discuss the use of elbow braces with your employer. Elbow braces are designed to provide support to elbows during heavy exertion.

  Stretching and Yoga

Develop a habit of stretching before exertion or include it in your morning routine. Repeated stretching sessions will increase your body’s flexibility and range of motion.

  Get Problems Diagnosed Early

Elbow injuries may start developing without notice. The pain might be too low for you to detect. However, with time the pain can worsen, affecting your daily life. Consult a physical therapist if you notice a constant pain that doesn’t heal over a couple of days.

  Tennis Elbow Treatment

“True” tennis elbow can last between six months to two years. An elbow splint or brace will prevent stress on the elbow from accidental jerks.

  First Aid

Apply the RICE first-aid method to injuries, (rest, ice, compress and elevate). Rest the injured area. Apply ice to it. Lightly compress the injured area with an elastic medical bandage and raise it above the level of your heart (lie down and prop your elbow on a pillow).

Consult a doctor for medication to help with the pain and swelling and consult with a professional physical therapist.

  Recovery

Physical therapy and range-of-motion exercises speed up elbow recovery. Intolerable pain, difficulty doing daily activities, and decreased range of motion necessitate consulting a physical therapist.

  Surgery

Surgery is the last resort. If physical therapy fails to address the condition, doctors can remove the damaged tendons surgically. After surgery, your tendons will need additional care and time to heal. The joint’s flexibility may also decrease, requiring physical therapy to achieve functionality again.
~ Pickleball has many similarities with tennis, the biggest of which being the shoe type. You can put on a pair of tennis shoes on the pickleball court and you’ll be good to go.
~ But why not wear running and other types of shoes? The reason lies in the design of the tennis shoes. Tennis shoes provide feet and ankle stability during quick turns and side steps.

  Get Treatment for Previous Injuries

If you have unhealed injuries, work on those first. People instinctively shift their leg on one leg when they have an injury in the other leg. Thus, the healthy leg sustains more strain when an injured person runs or walks.

The best method to work on injuries is to get physical therapy. A professional therapist can work one-on-one with you to diagnose and treat the problem. The therapy program can contain either exercises or acoustic wave therapy or red light therapy based on your individual needs and convenience.

  Use Leg Cramp Pills

People who have frequent or nocturnal leg cramps can keep muscle cramp pills with them. These medications help relieve muscle spasms and muscle spasticity. Keep in mind that some medications have side effects. Consult a doctor before using these medications. Homeopathic options such as the Hyland’s Naturals Leg Cramp tablets are also well received by people.

  Stretch After Matches

Stretching is more of a prevention than a cure. If your episodes of leg cramps are few and far between, stretching will keep it that way. Stretch after intense activity or sport while the muscles are still warm. Stretching breaks down lactic acid and promotes muscle recovery. Here’s a

Do Leg Cramps Have Any Adverse Effects?

Cramps are not fatal. Generally, they go away after a few minutes without intervention. But the pain can get highly intolerable, enough to disrupt your schedule. Leg cramps can make muscles tender for hours.

A few episodes of leg cramps are acceptable. The need to see a physical therapist arises when these cramps start affecting your daily life. The likelihood of sustaining cramps increases with age. Leg cramps are also a symptom of some medical conditions, such as:

Unfortunately, pain-free gardening becomes a chore when the body starts hurting due to aging. Like any other strenuous activity, gardening and yard work cause injuries and soreness. The use of medication or physical therapy becomes necessary to manage pain in such cases. Most common gardening injuries include:

It doesn’t matter if you are getting old or have chronic pain conditions. With precautions and physical therapy, you can develop a newfound enthusiasm for gardening. Here are some tips for you to get you started.

will improve muscular blood flow. The risk of injury will reduce and you will be more agile. Similarly, cooling down after an exhausting activity will bring your blood pressure and body temperature. Cooling down reduces the chance of getting cramps.

If prior injuries limit your range of movements, you can get physical therapy.

Bend your knees and exert pressure from your glutes, thighs, and shoulders while lifting heavy objects from the ground. It will prevent injuries for a Pain-Free Gardening Experience and keep back pain during long gardening sessions. Here’s a video explaining the correct mechanics of lifting heavy objects.

Chronic pain can make lifting objects and working long sessions impossible. If you have chronic pain, you can consider physical therapy treatment. It is a non-invasive and long-term solution for many medical conditions. Consult a physical therapist in Utah to learn more.

Holding a position for long disrupts blood flow and locks the muscles in that position. So, mindfully take breaks and stretch your back, limbs, and neck to release tension.

Vary your tasks so that one muscle group doesn’t bear excessive pressure. Many physical therapy programs feature various stretching exercises because of their effectiveness.

Raised beds and trellises are a great option for people suffering from back and knee pain. Yes, you may need some foreplanning to make the shift. But a lot of information on the topic is readily available

     – Excited for the Golf Season: Is Your Body Ready? Whether you’re aspiring for the eagle, albatross, or ace this golf season, conditioning your body for golf is the most feasible way toward outstanding performance. Enrolling in a golf physical therapy program will help you correct your posture, achieve peak fitness, and avoid common golf-related injuries.

Swinging golf clubs puts a load on the spine, wrist, hips, elbow, knees, and rotator cuff. Injuries develop when the load is not distributed evenly across the body parts. Improper posture and incorrect muscle use combined with other bad habits may cause muscle soreness at best or make you quit the whole season at worst.

Therapists personalize golf physical therapy programs according to the clients’ age and fitness level. For example, if you are suffering from lower back pain, therapists can help you adjust the mechanics of the swing to reduce strain on your spine.

How Physical Therapy Can Condition You for Golf?

  Improved Mechanics

With one-on-one sessions, therapists can assess your fitness and design exercises that improve body movement – from the address of the backswing to the top of the backswing to the follow-through. Therefore, you can generate more power in your swings, maintain balance, and distribute the load equally across your body.

  Better Flexibility

These customized exercises will increase your muscle strength and flexibility. With repeated sessions, the range of motion of the muscles will expand. As a result, your movements will become smoother and faster.

  Fewer Injuries

Your golf physical therapy program will feature exercises focusing on rehabilitating any previous injuries and wounds to prevent their aggravation. Increased muscular flexibility and strength, and better mechanics will prevent golf-related injuries, such as wrist injuries, golfer’s elbow, lower back pain, tendonitis, shoulder pain, and foot and ankle injuries.

Get the Extra Edge with Physical Therapy

If you have been playing golf for decades and feel like your skills have plateaued, you can work alongside your physical therapist to refine your game. During the sessions, experts will scrutinize every step of the swing and suggest postures and exercises that increase the swing’s power.

More people play golf as a hobby than professionally. Generally, they play only during seasons and go back to the desk and chair lifestyle in between. The result is a sore neck and shoulders, injured knees, and tight hips after a few games.

Most people get physical therapy only after facing a complication. However, by being proactive, you can outperform your colleagues and finish the season in tip-top shape while others complain of sore bodies.

Specific drills for early rehabilitation promote diaphragmatic breathing, pelvic flexibility, core strength, and active arm, ankle, and foot movement. Additionally, your therapist will check the healing progress of your previous injuries and suggest ways for physical therapy to heal them faster, offer postures and techniques that have the least damaging effect on the injury, or warn you against participating in golf to prevent those injuries from worsening.

Acoustic wave therapy is also known as extracorporeal shock wave therapy. It’s been studied continuously for the last decades. Most studies observe that this therapy positively impacts the patient’s well-being. The decrease in pain is significant, and the results last for the long term. Here are some studies on the effectiveness of acoustic wave therapy for pain.

This study was conducted on 30 people with lower back pain. The patient had back pain for over three months. Researchers ensured that the root cause for the pain was more or less the same. None of the participants has any special conditions such as compression fractures, spinal tumors, etc., causing the pain. Following the therapy, the mean VAS, ODI, and BDI scores were reduced by 3.4, 19.6, and 7.1 points respectively.

For this study, researchers divided the participants into three groups. Each group had 24 participants with neck and upper back myofascial pain. For four weeks each, the first group was treated with shockwave therapy. The second group received standard care (ultrasound + hot pack + self-stretch exercises). And the third group performed self-stretch exercises.

At the end of treatment, the mean NRS pain rating of the people in the treatment group fell from 6.9 to 3. The mean NRS pain rating of the people in the control group only reduced from 7.4 to 6. Another study involving 50 participants saw a significant decrease in the pain value and number of tender muscles in patients with TMD-associated pain. A different study proves the effectiveness of its for acne treatment. Infrared and near-infrared therapies are also known to effectively treat lines, wrinkles, and skin roughness.

A therapist administers light by exposing the patient to a lamp, device, or laser that emits red light. It’s as simple as that. The treatment duration is between one to four months, requiring multiple sessions. During a light therapy session, the therapist holds or places a source of red or infrared light a few inches from the skin for several minutes. You can contact a red light therapy expert to learn the exact number of sessions and treatment costs associated with treating your condition.

The pain from injuries such as fractures, burns, or muscle damage can linger for months. Light therapy can relieve the pain of old wounds that hurt even months or years after healing. Even if you have a fresh injury, this can speed up tissue, ligament, bone, and muscle repair. Patients can manage pain by reducing inflammation in the area surrounding the injury.

Research says that this treatment reduces signs of aging. The therapy can increase collagen production in the skin and make it firmer. The results are not permanent as old cells die and skin slowly loses elasticity. Maintenance sessions will be required to keep the skin rejuvenated.

It works on the principle of photobiomodulation (PBM); the same phenomenon that makes your retina send electrical signals to the brain when light falls on it, or the chemical reaction that makes your skin produce vitamin D upon exposure to sunlight.

Therapy results can take three to four months to become noticeable. Pain relief from red light therapy can last permanently, but signs of aging will return as the skin cells turnover.

Functional capacity evaluations are designed to evaluate a person’s recovery from injury as well as their ability to perform functional work tasks. Job applicants and people who are returning to work after recovering from an injury or illness are required to undergo these evaluations. If a job requires pulling, pushing, carrying, or any other form of physical exertion, it is crucial to evaluate the fitness of workers for workplace safety.

Should You Take a Functional Capacity Evaluation?

Typically a functional capacity evaluation will be ordered by physicians, workman comp case managers, or attorneys. Take a functional capacity evaluation to ensure that you don’t jeopardize your co-workers’ health or your own because it’s possible for a seemingly healed muscle or joint to buckle under strenuous conditions.

It’s in the best interest of employers to get a functional capacity evaluation of their new applicants and the return-to-work status of current workers, as it is the best way to ascertain whether the applicants and returning workers have the necessary physical capacity to do the job. The evaluation can also help employers avoid any workers’ compensation claim disputes.

How is Functional Capacity Evaluation Performed?

The evaluation is a series of tests that produce an objective report about an individual’s physical fitness. It is usually conducted by a licensed therapist, or physician. The evaluation starts with an interview and examination of the subject’s medical history.

The physical exercises are designed to put your endurance, strength, range of motion, and flexibility to the test. Common functional capacity evaluation tests include:

Psychological functional capacity evaluations measure a person’s ability to perform cognitive and psychological tasks. Though, it’s not as popular as the physical evaluation and is more applicable to the elderly or people who have suffered trauma.

  Importance of Functional Capacity Evaluations

Functional Capacity Evaluations give a snapshot of a worker’s ability to do specific job functions. It also provides recommendations for any altering that may be required to make the job duties safer. The outcomes are purely objective. The employers and workers get a definite answer to whether or not the worker is fit to return to work. It can also help the workers return with a reduced capacity if the recovery is taking too long.

A fresh injury to the recovering muscle or joint can be a major setback for the worker, as they can lose many work hours if they return to work without completing their recovery. Unrecovered individuals are a hazard to their co-workers as well. Employers and workers should encourage functional capacity evaluations to minimize workplace injury and downtime at work.

A functional capacity evaluation puts the workers and employers on the same page regarding the worker’s compensation claims. There’s no room for fraud and the workers get the financial aid they deserve. The worker can use this evaluation to claim compensation, social security, and other benefits.

The skiing season is almost over, and it’s a great time to work on your recovery from ski injuries. If you had an unfortunate accident or have a joint that hurts when you put pressure on it, you could use physical therapy to make a recovery from that nagging ski injury.

Long after ski injuries heal, the pain can persist for the next few weeks or months. Reasons for the continued pain can be complex. However, a professional physical therapist can identify the problem and assist with physical therapy to treat the condition. Physical therapy methods, such as key exercises or acoustic wave therapy, could increase mobility and the strength of the affected area, eliminating pain.

The ACL is a strong band of ligaments located in the knee. It connects the femur to the shin bone. A sudden twist or impact on the knee can tear the ligaments. The injury can make walking difficult and can take weeks to heal.

MCL works in conjunction with ACL to connect the femur to the shin bone. MCL is present at the inner side of the knee, i.e., the side that’s close to the other knee.

Shoulder ski injuries result from a direct collision with a tree, an object, or crashing on the ground. A fracture in the shoulder can make moving the arm difficult for months.

Wrist and thumb fractures are common among novice skiers. Breaking a fall with palms puts pressure on the wrist and thumbs.

There’s a condition called, Skier’s thumb, caused by damage to a ligament at the base of the thumb. This condition can make simple daily activities like holding a pen difficult.

Helmets can safeguard against critical ski injuries such as skull fractures. Unfortunately, it can’t entirely prevent skiers from sustaining head injuries and concussions caused by a collision. Head whiplash can make neck muscles sore as well.

Constant strain on the lower back can make the lower back hurt long after you stop skiing. Serious back-related ski injuries include spinal trauma and lumbar injury caused by a fall or twist.

Acoustic Wave Therapy is a non-invasive method of healing ski injuries and strengthening the affected area. A device sends high-energy pulses into the affected area to stimulate cell and collagen growth by inducing an inflammatory response. Acoustic Wave Therapy can treat chronic conditions as well.

Application of the RICE method is critical in the first few hours of the injury.

stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. The name is self-explanatory. Give rest to the affected area, apply ice, use an elastic bandage to compress the area, and elevate the area above the level of the heart. For example, if you have sprained your ankle, lie down on a couch and prop your leg on a pillow.

An adhesive bandage or tape can be wound around the affected area to restrict pain-causing movement while allowing mobility. Apart from treating injuries, taping and strapping can also be used to prevent ski injuries and maintain correct posture.

Once the injury has healed, a physical therapist can provide stretching and custom-tailored exercises within a program to accelerate your recovery. The physical therapy program can go for weeks, and if you follow through with it, you have a high chance of full recovery.

Erectile Dysfunction – Increasing stress levels and unhealthy lifestyles have led to an increase in men with declining sexual health. Today, erectile dysfunction is no longer an issue faced only by senior men. A

           study conducted in 2014

found that one in every four erectile dysfunction patients is a young man below the age of 40.

Treatment for this dysfunction includes; lifestyle changes, pills, vacuum pumps, surgery, implants, and acoustic wave therapy. Out of these options, making healthier lifestyle changes might not cure everyone, and some people might not like the idea of taking medications or getting surgical treatment. For such people, Acoustic Wave Therapy is a great option. It’s a non-invasive method that treats erectile dysfunction at its core, and the results can last for 1-2 years.

         What is Acoustic Wave Therapy?

Acoustic Wave Therapy is also known as “low-intensity extracorporeal shockwave therapy (LI-ESWT),” or “Shock Wave Therapy” for short.

The therapist places a wand-like device along the shaft of the penis, which then emits gentle pulses that stimulate an inflammatory response in the tissue, resulting in increased blood flow in that area.

This therapy stimulates blood flow, new tissue growth, and blood-vessel formation in the penis. As a result, erections become harder and longer-lasting, and sexual performance is enhanced.

           Studies

on the effectiveness of acoustic wave therapy have found that it has a longer-lasting effect for most patients with Erectile Dysfunction. In one of the studies, researchers compared the results of a control group and found that the effectiveness of acoustic wave therapy was not a mere “placebo effect.”

         Benefits of Acoustic Wave Therapy

Apart from increasing blood flow to the penis, patients experience increased sensitivity and better orgasms. It’s a better all-around cure for erectile dysfunction than its alternatives, such as medication, vacuum pumps, or surgery.

Medications such as Viagra, Levitra, and devices like vacuum pumps do not address the root cause of the issue. On the other hand, acoustic wave therapy is an effective, long-term solution for erectile dysfunction. Patients don’t have to carry around devices or take medication to induce an erection.

Another appealing reason to choose acoustic wave therapy for erectile dysfunction is that it has fewer side effects than medications, surgery, and ED pumps.

If you have tried other treatments with unsatisfactory results, you should

           consult a therapist

to give acoustic wave therapy a go.

         Treatment Method and Duration

During an acoustic wave therapy session, the therapist places a wand-like device along the shaft and base of the penis. It doesn’t require anesthesia as the procedure is painless and causes only slight discomfort. Most sessions last an average of 15 minutes and will not disrupt your schedule.

Your therapist can recommend 6-12 sessions in a 2-3 month period for best results. New tissue and blood vessels can take more than a month to grow, showing you results in a relatively short amount of time.

Generally, the results last for 1-2 years. However, you can ward off erectile dysfunction for even longer by implementing a healthy diet and living a balanced lifestyle.

Side-effects of Acoustic Wave Therapy for Erectile Dysfunction

          Acoustic wave therapy can have

           side effects

          , such as:

Thus, it’s suitable that you refrain from sexual intercourse for a few days after a session.

Men with a penile skin condition or urinary tract infection should avoid seeking treatment for erectile dysfunction before treating the underlying condition first.
